W.B.C.T.C.  NEWS – JAN’04

THIS AFFECTS ALL MEMBERS – NEW & OLD.

In October 2003 all CTC clubs had to register all ‘runs leaders’ with the CTC organisation (ensuring that only capable leaders were registered).

WHY? – if an existing or new member was involved in a road accident during a club run they might find themselves being prosecuted by a member of the public. As a CTC member you are protected by CTC insurance. However as we ride as a recognised club the runs leader could possibly be prosecuted as well, even if they weren’t involved in the accident. Previously the CTC membership insurance wouldn’t protect runs leaders against this, but now if the runs leader is registered they will be Insured against this by the CTC.

This is good news, but it does mean that we all have a responsibility to ensure riders on club runs ride safely and the highway code is obeyed. Bad riding practices occur most Sundays and by longstanding members as well as new riders. This is no longer acceptable. In a society where claim culture is becoming more prevalent, we must ride in a manner that doesn’t compromise the members who ‘make the runs happen’.

A code of conduct has been established by the club committee which all riders are expected to comply with. We all want to ride for the pleasure of it, and red tape is the last thing we all want but there is nothing unreasonable within the code that should offend members. – consideration must be given to other road users, ride sensibly and use common sense i.e. single file on busy roads (not in the middle of the road), obey traffic singles, be observant when overtaking and violent conduct is forbidden at all times. The code itself though details far more so please read it.

We are clamping down on dangerous riding for the safety of all members. Please obey all highway codes and ride in a responsible manner. The cooperation of all existing and new members in these matters will be greatly appreciated. However if a member persists upon breaking the club code of conduct (attached), they will be asked to leave the club. We dearly hope that this will never be necessary.

It is also necessary for new members to become a CTC member after participating in 5 club runs, failure to do so could influence the runs leaders liability should an accident occur during a club run. To join CTC you can phone  0870 873 0061 and pay by debit / credit card or alternatively ask a committee member for a CTC membership form on club night.

The cooperation of all existing and new members in these matters will be greatly appreciated.
